Sarcenet is a thin woven silk.   It dates back according to Montgomery as early as the 15th century.  A quick look at the Old Bailey Proceedings turns up sarcenet thru out the 18th century and well into the 19th century.  It could be woven plain or twilled in solids, changeable, striped and figured.  Used for any purpose where a thin silk was required, you find Sarcenet quilted petticoats and capes appear in ads of the 18th century and an occasional gown. It shows up frequently as a lining material in lady’s and men’s garments.  In the early 19th century you find a good deal of Lady’s gowns being made from sarcenet which gave a soft drape so desirable to the diaphanous fashion.   Our sarcenet weighs 24mm with a crisp hand.  It is suitable for any clothing project requiring lightweight silk.   It is also wonderful for trims, hats, bonnets and accessories.
