Chinese, India, Persian, English & French “taffety” or taffeta were all common silks advertised in the 18th and 19th century.  Woven plain they were made in a variety of colors, some changeable, some “chine” or warp printed, some with stripes, checks and patterns.  All were woven in a like fashion varying only in their width or number of silk yarns in the warp and weft.  After the American Revolution great quantities of silk came to the colonies directly from China, including taffetas, satins and lustrings. Many plain silks were woven "shot" or "changeable, and often described using either or both terms in primary descriptions.  This taffeta is woven with a gold warp & dark blue weft creating this beautiful purplish gold color. All Social levels wore silk down to the lower sortswho could find silk in the second hand market or having it provided by a master or mistress.  This taffetta is suitable for Lady’s Gowns, Petticoats, Jackets, of the 18th and 19th century,Mantles, Pelisses,  Men's Banyans and Wrapping Gowns, Suits, Waistcoats, Linings and Accessories.
