100% Irish Linen 60 in. wide

Linen cloth was woven of flax fiber in many grades and weaves. Used in every aspect of living from clothing to household needs to furnishings to the shroud made for the corpse, linen was so common that a tax was proposed as a source of easy revenue on the coarser sorts being imported into the US towards the end of the 18th century.  Finer, semisheer linens were often used for aprons, sleever ruffles, tuckers, caps and summer weight gowns.  The pattern of this linen is produced by introducing a heavier yarn of linen or cotton into the weave to create the cording.  We have seen patterns like this in swatch books of dimity as well as extant garments. Our linen is light weight, semi sheer with a crisp hand and well suited to Women’s clothing such as gowns, aprons, mitts, accesories and mantelets.  This stripe runs selvage to selvage. Keep in mind your pattern layout when purchasing if you wish the stripes to be vertical in the garment.
