Manchester Velvet was a highly popular fabric especially in the 2nd half of the 18th century.  Hundreds of swatches from the 18th century in plain, fancy and printed can be found in Pattern books in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg, Cooper-Hewitt Museum and the Winterthur Museum.  Found often as men's suiting, it was also occasionally found as cuffs and collars, and occasionally as a gown in the 18th century.  Cotton velvets appear in the 19th century in all manner of ladies and mens garments.  Our velvet is sturdy with a beautiful drape and hand.  It is suitable for men's suits, lady's formal gowns, wrappers, accessories, capes and trims.
