Product Options

Yardage:
100% Italian cotton 45 inches wide

The Greater Manchester area of England thrived in cotton manufacture by the last quarter of the 18th century and well into the 19th century.  Cheap cotton from India & the American slave trade plus superior spinning and weaving thanks to several inventions quickly escalated the cotton textile industry as demand drove the market.  Cotton was a popular textile among all classes due to its cheapness, ease of cleaning and bright color.  It is said by some historians that by the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Britain had achieved a monopoly on the export of textiles to the Americas.  We have seen striped cottons particularly in this colorway in Ladies garments from the last quarter as well as the early 19thcentury.  We have found vritually identical samples in Ackermann plates as well.  This is a lightweight tightly woven cotton suitable for gowns, jackets, summer waistcoats, children's frocks and accessories.
