Dark grounded prints were popular from midcentury on, showing up in advertisements and orders.  Prints could be complex multi-colored florals to simple one and two color geometrics, sprigs or florals which were inexpensive and highly desired.  In our research we found a good number of purple backgrounds with brown appearing midcentury and becoming popular especially in the 60’s on into the 70’s.  Our print is based on our work with the Foundling Museum token collection where we found several prints similar in style and using the purple ground which ranged from a reddish purple to a bluish purple with red and white.  A popular method of creating interest cheaply was to add a background to the print as well.  This was often done with nails put into the printing block to create a spotted ground.  Ours is color matched to originals. and the cotton cloth it is printed on is virtually identical in weight, weave and appearance to printed cotton we have documented.  This textile is suited to gowns, petticoats, Ladies jackets of all sorts, children’s gowns, linings, & men’s wrappers.
