100% Irish Linen 60 inches wide

Linen cloth was woven of flax fiber in many grades and weaves.  Used in every aspect of living from clothing, to household needs to furnishings to the shroud made for the corpse, linen was so common that a tax was proposed as a source of easy revenue on the coarser sorts being imported into the US towards the end of the 18th century.  Woven stripes were a common way of introducing pattern and color into textiles inexpensively. Sometimes the looms were warped with the stripes but many times the stripes were introduced in the weft yarns.  We have looked at a wide variety of linen as well as linen and cotton stripes in our research.  We found a very similar stripe in the Foundling collection which used some cotton yarn for the brighter colors.  This all linen textile is a good facimile as the linen and cotton goods of England could be found to be as fine as the linens of Ireland.  This linen is well suited to gowns, jackets, petticoats, accessories, children's garments as well as men's summer jackets and waistcoats.
