Plush was a soft faced wool, much like velvet dyed in all manner of colors and was a popular choice for breeches, waistcoats and winter jackets.  It was worn by all social classes and appears in runaway accounts and in orders for livery. as well as tailors account books.  Madder red, was a common dye gotten from the root of the Rubia tinctorum.  It was used widely in the 18thc not only for dying reds, but also sad purples, greens, blacks and browns using different mordants.  Our wool is heavy enough for outerwear but soft enough for winter breeches, lady's capes, winter mitts, jackets and winter waistcoats.
