Threads of Feeling: The London Foundling Hospital's Textile Tokens, 1740-1770

Between 1741 and 1760, more than 4000 babies were left by their mothers at the Foundling Hospital and for each one a sample of the mother's garment or their baby's garments was kept for identification records. This collection book features full color photos of a number of the "textile tokens" from this landmark exhibit.  John Styles, the author of  "Dress of the People" brings to light the significance of what is now recognized as Britain's largest collection of everyday textiles.
