In run-away ads, portraits, genre art, advertisements and thefts we find handkerchiefs or neck-handkerchiefs of many descriptions, worn by women and men for fashion and practicality through out the 18th century and on in to the 19th century.  The pattern of this handkerchief is based on a portrait called "The Young Sportsman" by Robert Edge Pine 1766 in the Art Gallery of South Wales.  We developed the pattern by using the portrait as well as our primary research of printed textiles from this time period,  Measuring approximately 34 inches square it is made of hand loomed cotton mul, block printed and hand finished.
