Bone Knotting Shuttle

In the 17th and 18th century "knotting" was a popular Lady's needle craft.  Knotting precedes tatting which was also a form of trim making. Primary accounts discuss the process of knotting which involved creating a series of knots to create trims that were used to embellish garments as well as being used in needlework.  Surviving contemporary portraiture shows women holding their knotting shuttles sometimes very elaborately made.  It is thought that this might have been to better show off the delicacy of the hands.  Our knotting shuttle is approximately 4 inches long  and fits easily into the hand.
