100% Cotton 45 inches wide
The Greater Manchester area of England thrived in cotton manufacture by the
last quarter of the 18th century and well into the 19th century. Cheap
cotton from India & the American slave trade plus superior spinning and
waving thanks to several inventions quickly escalated the cotton textile
industry as demand drove the market. Cotton was a popular textile among
all classes due to it's cheapness, ease of cleaning and bright color. It
is said by some historians that by the time of the Napoleonic Wars, Britain had
achieved a monopoly on the export of textiles to the
Americas. This blue and yellow stripe cotton is double
wove in the striped to create a corded effect. The yellow & blue
reflects a popular color combination of the Napoleonic period. We have seen
weaves identical to this, especially in the Ackermann plates. It would
be well suited for gowns, jackets, petticoats, summer waistcoats,
children's frocks and accessories.
