Linen cloth was woven of flax fiber in many grades and weaves.  Used in every aspect of living from clothing, to household needs to furnishings to the shroud made for the corpse, linen was so common that a tax was proposed as a source of easy revenue on the coarser sorts being imported into the US towards the end of the 18th century.   Indigo was a popular 18thc color known for it's colorfastness.   Saxon Blue  created by dissolving indigo in oil of vitriol shortened the production time and created a bright and beautiful blue with a slight green cast.  Introduced in the mid 18th century, it opened up new possibilities for indigo dying and printing. We have studied original samples of wool dated 1771 labeled Saxon Blue and Saxon Green.  This  color closely resembles the Saxon Blue.  Our linen is a medium weight and well suited to Women’s clothing such as gowns, jackets, aprons, accessories and petticoats, Men’s jackets, linings and waistcoats as well as children’s garments.
